How Long Does It Take to Get STI Test Results Back?

Most STI results come back in one to three business days. A few take longer, and the honest answer depends on which test, not just which lab. Here’s the real timeline, test by test, and what’s worth doing while you wait.

The timeline by test

Chlamydia and gonorrhea (urine or swab): usually one to three business days.

HIV: often one business day for a standard antibody/antigen test, longer if a confirmatory test is needed.

Syphilis: usually one to two business days.

Herpes (type 1 and 2): two to five business days.

Trichomoniasis: three to seven business days.

A full panel takes as long as its slowest test, so if your visit ordered several of these at once, plan around the longest one on the list rather than the shortest.

Why the wait isn’t just about the lab

Collection itself takes fifteen to thirty minutes, often less. What takes longer is the detection window: how soon an infection actually becomes reliably detectable after exposure. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are usually detectable within a few days of exposure. HIV can take two to four weeks to show up reliably on a test, which is why a provider may ask you to test again later even after an early negative. Syphilis can also take a few weeks to become detectable. A fast result and a complete answer aren’t always the same thing, and a provider’s guidance on when to retest matters as much as the turnaround time on any one test.

Know the moment it’s in

Protecht pulls results straight from your provider and notifies you the moment they’re ready, so you’re not refreshing a portal.

What to do while you’re waiting

Keep using protection with any partner in the meantime. If a test was ordered because of a specific exposure or symptom, ask the provider directly whether anything changes what you should do before the result comes back, rather than guessing. And if a partner asks where things stand, “still waiting, I’ll show you the moment it’s in” is a complete answer. It doesn’t need padding.
