Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Protecht — how it works, how your data stays private, and how you share on your terms.
Getting Started
Protecht is a HIPAA-compliant iOS app that lets you securely access your verified STI test results from your healthcare provider and share them with sexual partners — in a read-only, tamper-proof window that expires after 60 seconds.
Protecht is free to download. Finding testing locations and accessing and sharing your HIV status are always free, on every account. A Day Pass ($2.99 for 24 hours) unlocks sharing for all nine conditions and vaccination records for a day. Protecht+ ($3.99/month or $39/year) unlocks that same sharing on an ongoing basis, plus the full Care tab: testing reminders, medication reminders, symptom tracking, and connection tracking. Day Pass does not include Care features, only sharing.
Both unlock sharing for all nine conditions and vaccination records, Day Pass for 24 hours, Protecht+ on an ongoing basis. Only Protecht+ includes the Care tab: testing reminders, medication reminders, symptom tracking, and connection tracking. If you just need to share once, Day Pass is the lighter option. If you want the full routine, Protecht+ covers it.
Currently, Protecht is only available on iOS. Android is in development — check protecht.health for updates.
How It Works
Protecht connects to Apple Health on your device, which syncs your clinical records directly from your healthcare provider. Your results are pulled securely through Apple's Health Records feature — no separate login or patient portal required.
No. Results come exclusively from verified provider systems. This is intentional — it's what makes Protecht trustworthy. What your clinic enters is exactly what your partner sees.
Nine STI conditions: HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Herpes (HSV), HPV, Hepatitis B, Trichomoniasis, and Covid-19. Vaccination records for Meningitis, Mpox, Hepatitis A, and Covid-19 are also supported.
You choose what to share and with whom. Your partner gets a read-only view that's accessible for 60 seconds, then automatically expires. No saving, no editing — by design.
Care
Five things: a clinic finder, testing reminders, medication reminders, symptom tracking, and connection tracking. They all live in one tab so your routine doesn't get split across apps. See the Care tab overview for details on each.
For most of it, yes. The clinic finder is free on every account. Testing reminders, medication reminders, symptom tracking, and connection tracking are all part of Protecht+.
No. Symptom and connection entries are for your own records only. They're never included in a share, no matter which conditions or documents you send.
Symptom and connection entries are yours: edit or delete them anytime. Locked calendar entries, like when a test result was shared or downloaded, are logged automatically with a timestamp and can't be edited.
Privacy & Security
No. Your health data — your test results, vaccination records, and anything else pulled from your provider — lives only on your phone. It's protected using AES-256-GCM encryption, the same standard used to secure data at rest across modern security-critical systems. The encryption keys are stored in Apple's Secure Enclave, a locked hardware chip built into your iPhone that even Apple can't access.
Protecht's servers never see your health information. The only things our servers handle are the logistics of sharing: confirming your identity, managing who has permission to view your results, and keeping a record of when results were accessed. None of that includes the actual content of your health records.
Yes. HIPAA is the federal law that governs how health information must be protected. Protecht is built to comply with it fully. Our servers run on AWS (Amazon Web Services), the cloud infrastructure used by most major hospitals and health systems in the U.S. We operate under a formal Business Associate Agreement with AWS, a legal contract required under HIPAA for any company that handles health-related data. Every time your results are shared, a detailed access log is created automatically. The system is designed around HIPAA's technical requirements from the ground up, not patched on afterward.
Only you — and whoever you explicitly choose to share with, for the duration you allow. Every sharing event is logged.
Healthcare Provider Integration
Any provider using Apple HealthKit, which covers approximately 250 million patient records including Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, UCSF, and many others. Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp integrations are also supported.
No. Protecht works through Apple HealthKit — the same connection your patients already use to view their health records in Apple Health. If your system supports that connection (most major health systems do, including Epic, Kaiser, Sutter, and others), Protecht works automatically. No IT setup, no new contracts, nothing required on your end.
Protecht uses Apple HealthKit to access your medical records. Free accounts include access to your HIV results; subscribe to unlock all 9 STI conditions and vaccination records. First, check whether your provider is supported at institutions.healthrecords.apple.com. If they are, make sure you've connected your health records through the iOS Health app. For further help, visit protecht.health/help or email info@protecht.health.
Account & Subscription
Subscriptions are managed through the App Store. Go to Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iPhone to manage or cancel.
Your health data lives on your device — deleting the app removes it from your phone. Protecht's servers hold no PHI (Personal Health Info) to delete.
Trust & Verification
Because they come directly from the provider — not from the user. Protecht has no mechanism that allows anyone to edit, upload, or fabricate results. The data integrity is enforced at the architecture level, not just by policy.
No. Results are provider-verified and read-only. There's no user-editable field in the sharing flow.
